French couple charged over eight baby murders

A French judge charged a mother with the murder of eight of her newborn babies on Thursday and her husband with hiding the bodies.

The pair appeared before an investigating magistrate in the northern town of Douai after police found the skeletal remains of eight babies at two addresses in their village.

The mother, aged in her mid-forties, was charged with the "deliberate homicides of minors under the age of 15", which carries a life sentence. Her husband was indicted for "failure to report a crime and harbouring corpses."

Stemcells coaxed to rebuild bone, cartilage

Scientists have shown for the first time that it may be possible to replace a human hip or knee with a joint grown naturally inside the body using the patient's stem cells.

In experiments on rabbits, the researchers coaxed the animals' stem cells to rebuild the bone and cartilage of a missing leg joint, according to a study published on Thursday.

"This is the first time an entire joint surface was regenerated with return of functions including weight bearing and locomotion," lead researcher Jeremy Mao, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center, said in a statement.

New British lender Metro Bank opens first branch

Metro Bank, Britain's first new high street lender for more than 100 years, opens its first branch to the public Thursday in a move aimed at shaking up the country's retail banking sector.

Co-founded by billionaire US businessman Vernon Hill, Metro Bank hopes to tap into public dissatisfaction with the traditional banking sector following the recent financial crisis.

The first branch is opening in central London but Metro Bank aims to have up to 250 branches in and around the city within ten years.

Shell profit climbs to $4.39bn in second quarter

British oil giant Royal Dutch Shell reported on Thursday a 15-percent jump in net profits to 4.393 billion dollars (3.377 billion euros) in the second quarter, on cutting costs and raising output.

"This is a good performance from Shell, despite today's challenging macro-economic conditions. We are on track for growth," Shell's chief executive Peter Voser said in the company's earnings statement.
